Amy lifted her head from the pillow and laid it in the crook of Katy’s arm, snuggling in closer. It was bedtime and they were lying on Amy’s bed, preparing for the evening ritual.
Amy picked up the tablet and flicked deftly until she saw the pic of her favourite dinosaur.
“Again? Seriously?” Katy said in mock surprise.
Katy idly fondled Amy’s blond curls, admiring her own, deep, pink nails, that shimmered in the soft light of her daughter’s nursery.
Amy meanwhile, contemplated the illustration while pulling on Katy’s white pearl necklace, twisting and accidentally pinching Katy’s skin.
“Ouch!” exclaimed Katy.
Amy quickly withdrew her hand.
“Sorry Daddy … “
They both caught their breath and stared at each other, not quite sure what to say.
Katy looked at her daughter with the warmest of smiles.
“It’s all right darling. It’s going to take time for us to adjust, but I’ll always be your Daddy.”
Then she lowered her voice to extinct frequencies and growled softly like a baby dinosaur while hugging Amy fondly.
This week’s Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers‘s photo prompt is ©Yinglan. Thanks for the great prompt! I hope you don’t mind the direction I took it in. As you know, I always strive to use a prompt thoughtfully and strive to find ways to take it to unexpected places.
