The Watch

I wanted to be your valiant explorer, pith helmet, brass telescope and binoculars.

You were a burlesque vampire queen. Ruby red corset, black and red vertical striped stockings and small black hat tilted at an angle with a long black veil.

For me, it provided relief from the strict stuffy garb of my day job.

For you, it was an extension of your personality.

By day you presided over your boutique.

By night you clicked and clacked your shiny high-heeled boots on the cobbles, swinging your ornate cane, as you as you moved from one establishment to the next to hold court.

Night after night, I tried to get closer to you. I willed you to meet my gaze, but you were too occupied with your other subjects.

I drowned my sorrows with cheap beer and walked back home along the beach.

Taking out the fake Victorian pocket watch I’d purchased from the local store, I threw it towards the sea as far as I could.

It was time to move on.
